The Basics to Get You On-Track

Kart & Kart Stand

Once you determine which class is right for you, you'll need to purchase a kart. Most drivers start off with used karts, but it is advisable to choose a brand of chassis for which there is easy access to spare parts and components, such as a local parts dealer.

Safety Equipment

You will need an appropriate helmet, racing suit, gloves, neck guard, rib protector and shoes. As of 2024, Junior drivers (12 and under) must also have a chest protector. Equipment requirement information can be found in the ASN Canada Sporting Regulations here.

Tools

Typically for starting out you'll need basic tools such as hand tools (sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers), a fuel jug, compressor (12V will do), tire pressure gauge, and a pop-up shelter such as a canopy tent for shade. A small table is also helpful for workspace.

Transportation/Storage

You need a way of getting your kart and equipment to the track. It is possible to fit your things in a trailer as small as 8' long and this can be towed by almost any vehicle, but most people opt for something with a little more room.  MKA has a number of 20' SeaCans that can be rented for storage and Pit use. These are typically shared between two (or three) drivers. Contact a member of the Executive Board for more info on these.

Raceceiver 1-Way Radio

New as of 2025, to race at MKA, all drivers must be equipped with a Raceceiver one-way radio transmitter. These radios operate on a frequency which allows the Race Director to communicate instructions or warnings to the drivers directly to their in-ear headphones. It's a safety tool that allows instant communication and is mandatory for racing within our club.  These can be purchased online or from the local parts dealer.

Transponder

A fully charged and activated transponder that attaches to your kart (typically on the back of the seat) is required to participate on race days. They give a signal to the tracks timing and scoring system and keeps track of your lap times as well as your placement in your race class.
